Francis Sargent is elected governor of Massachusetts.

Sargent (R) defeats Boston mayor Kevin White (D). Sargent, who during one their campaign debates declared, “I am not a Boston politician,” even defeats White in Boston, receiving 97,378 votes to the Boston mayor’s 80,836. Turnout is 191,076 or 69.7%.
